Ooty

Ooty or Udaghamandalam is popularly known as the 'Queen of Hill Stations'. Located at the height of 2240 metres it was the summer headquarters of the Madras Government and is an interesting combination of British cottages and gardens and stands of Australian eucalypts introduced to provide sleepers for the railways but now more used for oil production. It is the centre of a tea and coffee growing area and home to the Toda tribespeople. Popular tourist attractions include the Botanical Gardens, the Lake on which boating is available, surrounding peaks like Doddabetta and Mukurti Walking and horse-riding are good ways to explore the surrounding downs and enjoy the spectacular views of the plains, and visits can be made to nearby Kotagiri and Coonnoor.
