Allahabad

Allahabad is situated at the confluence of the 3 sacred rivers - Ganga, Yamuna & the invisible Saraswati. It is here at the sangam that Hindus converge for a holy dip especially during the Kumbh Mela, held here every 12 years. Allahabad is amongst the oldest cities in India and is also one of its most prominent pilgrim centres. In mythology its origin is traced to a Yagna, Prakrista Yagna, performed here by Lord Brahma, the Creator God of the Hindu trinity - hence its earlier name of Prayag. It is also the home of the Nehru family and there is an excellent museum in their former home.

One more temple that is of importance for Hindus is of Hanuman. In this temple Shri Hanuman lays in a reclined position. Allahabad Museum is yet another place of interest.

 Allahabad Fort is another interesting tourist site of Allahabad. Situated on the northern banks of Yamuna River, Allahabad Fort was built by Akbar in 1583. Anand Bhawan is one more building that attracts many travelers.

It is regarded as the residence of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.
