Kanchipuram

Kanchipuram, one of the seven sacred cities of India, is famous for its exquisitely woven silk sarees and for its temples. Kanchipuram was a centre of learning from the 3rd century with Hindu and Buddhist philosophies flourishing side by side. This was the capital of the Pallava kingdom from the 6th-8th centuries during which time the first stone temples were constructed. The oldest temple, constructed in sandstone by the Pallavas, is the Kailasanatha temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, and there are many other fine temples.
