Madurai

Madurai is recorded in Tamil and Greek documents from the 4th century BC when it was a popular spice trading site. Since then it has been ruled by various dynasties. It's main attraction is the Meenakshi Temple with its ten towering Gopurams covered in multicoloured sculptures, raised by the Nayaks who ruled Madurai from the mid 16th- 18th centuries. Only the entrance gate and dance hall of the Indo-Saracenic Tirumalai Nayak Palace remain, but are worth seeing and the central courtyard is the venue for a daily sound and light show.
